Sustainche Farm™ products: The ‘Mopane Worms’ Episode

Thanks to all Sustainche Farm™ community members who voted during the past week !

We received a total of 7 votes. The final result is very interesting:

14.29 % a) Donkey meat rolls in tomato-chilli sauce.
57.14 % b) Cooked mopane worms in tomato-chilli sauce.
28.57 % c) Fried mahangu porridge and termites in tomato-chilli sauce.

a) Well, horse and donkey meat is indeed a speciality in France as well as it is in the western Rhine river provinces of Germany. In fact there are many donkeys in Northern Namibia, and it is said that some people here do eat donkey meat. However, this is not very common. No, the pictures do not show donkey meat rolls in tomato-chilli sauce ! Yes, Lisa ? “African Penguinche Lisa would like to add that although all of us respect personal tastes, Polar Bear Sustainche™ is personally very happy that none of his donkey friends arrive in Sustainche Farm™ kitchen.” Thank you, Lisa.

Owambo speciality 2c) No doubt, mahangu porridge as well as termites would be available ingredients in Northern Namibia. There is also no problem to fry mahangu porridge, mix it with termites and offer this in a tomato-chilli sauce. However, the pictures do not show such a highly creative kitchen 😉

Answer “b) Cooked mopane worms in tomato-chilli sauce” is correct ! The mopane leaves, both the fresh green and the dry brown ones, should have given a hint 🙂

 

Adult Gonimbrasia belinaGonimbrasia belina is a species of moth found in much of Southern Africa, whose large edible caterpillar, the mopani or mopane worm, is an important source of protein for millions of indigenous Southern Africans. The mopane worm is so called in English because it is usually – although not exclusively – found on the mopane tree, Colophospermum mopane.

mopane wormMopane worms are hand-picked in the wild. The traditional method of preserving mopane worms is to dry them in the sun. Dried mopane worms can be eaten raw as a crisp snack. As the dried mopane worm has very little flavor, mopane worms are frequently cooked in salty water with a few drops of sunflower oil and finally mixed and served in a tomato-chilli sauce.

This recipe is shown in the uppermost picture.
